Staying Active as the Weather Gets Colder
by: Alexandra Galieti
During the winter months, it’s tempting to curl up under a blanket in front of the television everyday, but it’s important to stay moving! This can be a difficult thing to do because of the cold and snowy conditions, but as long as you dress for the weather, it’s still possible to go out and play, and when this isn’t an option there’s plenty to do inside as well.
Instead of playing a hand held personal video game or a computer game, play an active system like Nintendo Wii. Not only does it get you moving, but it’s an activity to do with friends. If you or your friends don’t have a Wii, another idea is to make a fort in your bedroom or living room. With the help of the bed or couches, you can drape blankets to make a cool space for you to hang out. Putting it together will be just as fun as using it when it’s completed!
Visit local parks that have bike trails. With your parent’s permission, take a bike ride or hike down the path to view the autumn scenery while it lasts. You can also help your parents find indoor pools in your area. Most communities have recreation centers or a local school that has a pool. Find out when open swim hours are and enjoy the water like it is summertime again.
As the leaves continue to fall, help rake them into piles around your yard. This will not only be a help to your parents, but the piles are super fun to jump into! During rainy days, take advantage of gym class time at school. By actively participating in the games and activities, gym is a great place to burn off built up energy you have. Use these tips and come up with creative ideas of your own to keep the autumn and winter months interesting! |
